Every few years, a headline appears announcing that someone has found Noah’s Ark. Usually there is a blurry photograph, an unusual rock formation, or a satellite image that looks vaguely like a ship. Before long, somebody has added a red arrow, dramatic music, and the words “NOAH’S ARK FOUND!” to a YouTube thumbnail.

I’m not interested in doing that.

What interests me is that something genuinely worth watching is happening in eastern Turkey. In 2026, researchers began a new multidisciplinary investigation of the Durupınar Formation, a roughly 515-foot-long, boat-shaped formation near Mount Ararat. They are using ground-penetrating radar, electrical resistivity, LiDAR, geological analysis and other modern techniques to determine what is actually beneath it.

Is it Noah’s Ark? We don’t know. But there are enough unusual details here that I think dismissing the question would be just as premature as declaring the mystery solved.

A 515-Foot Question

The Durupınar Formation lies near Doğubayazıt in eastern Turkey, roughly 18 miles south of Mount Ararat. It was identified in aerial reconnaissance photographs by Turkish Army Captain İlhan Durupınar in 1959, and its resemblance to the outline of a large ship has fueled debate ever since.

The shape by itself doesn't tell us much. Nature produces all kinds of formations that resemble familiar objects. The dimensions, however, make the comparison more interesting. The formation is approximately 515 feet long, while Genesis gives us a surprisingly specific measurement for Noah's Ark: “The length of the ark shall be three hundred cubits, the breadth of it fifty cubits, and the height of it thirty cubits” (Genesis 6:15).

The problem, of course, is determining exactly how long a cubit was. There wasn't one universal cubit throughout the ancient world. A commonly used estimate of about 18 inches would make the Ark roughly 450 feet long. But the ancient Egyptian royal cubit was approximately 20.6 inches. Using that measurement, 300 cubits comes remarkably close to 515 feet.

That doesn't prove anything. Genesis doesn't tell us that Noah used the Egyptian royal cubit, and selecting a measurement simply because it gives us the answer we want would be working backward from a conclusion. Still, a boat-shaped formation roughly 515 feet long, when a documented ancient cubit puts the biblical Ark at roughly the same length, earns a place in my “Well, that's interesting” file.

It Doesn't Have to Be on Mount Ararat

There is another detail we often overlook. Genesis doesn't actually say the Ark landed on Mount Ararat. Genesis 8:4 says it rested “upon the mountains of Ararat.” That's plural.

The text points to a region, not necessarily the summit of the modern mountain bearing that name. Durupınar is roughly 18 miles from Mount Ararat, so its location doesn't establish that it is the Ark. But neither does its location automatically eliminate it. The common objection that Noah's Ark must be sitting somewhere on the modern peak asks Genesis to be more geographically specific than it actually is.

This is a good example of why I think we should approach questions like this in a particular order: Scripture first, evidence second, conclusions last.

Why Durupınar Is Interesting Again

People have argued about this formation for decades, but something changed in 2026. Turkish authorities approved a formal geological and geophysical research project directed by Prof. Dr. Cenker Atila of Sivas Cumhuriyet University in cooperation with Noah's Ark Scans. Researchers from several countries began fieldwork using modern techniques to map the formation and investigate what lies beneath it.

Previous ground-penetrating radar and electrical-resistivity studies had already identified subsurface anomalies that proponents believe may be significant. More recent work has continued examining unusual layers and geometric features beneath the surface. The project has also reported differences in soil composition inside and outside the formation. These findings are interesting, but they aren't yet answers. A radar anomaly isn't a wall, a right angle isn't automatically a room, and unusual soil chemistry isn't evidence of ancient timber by itself.

That's why the next phase matters so much. Researchers want to use the geophysical data to determine where physical sampling and core drilling could provide the most useful evidence. Radar can tell you that something unusual may be underground. Eventually, though, somebody has to find out what that something actually is.

And that's where an observation made years ago by a Bible teacher with a rather unusual background becomes particularly interesting.

Meet Chuck Missler

Chuck Missler wasn't a typical Bible teacher. He was a graduate of the United States Naval Academy at Annapolis, later studied engineering, and spent much of his professional career in aerospace, technology and corporate management before devoting himself extensively to teaching Scripture and biblical prophecy. And, in all transparency, he has had a huge influence on my understanding and approach to the Bible.

That background matters here because Missler knew something about ships. When he read the dimensions and construction specifications of Noah's Ark, he wasn't picturing the little Sunday school boat with giraffes sticking their heads through the roof. He saw an enormous vessel designed for a very specific purpose. The Ark didn't need to sail anywhere, make good time, or steer toward a destination. It needed to float and survive.

And one small construction detail in Genesis caught his attention.

Why Pitch the Inside?

Genesis 6:14 says, “Make thee an ark of gopher wood; rooms shalt thou make in the ark, and shalt pitch it within and without with pitch.”

Those last words are easy to read past. God didn't simply tell Noah to coat the exterior of the Ark. He specifically instructed him to apply pitch inside and outside.

The exterior application makes perfect sense. Pitch, tar, resin and bitumen have a long history in ancient shipbuilding. They were used to seal seams, protect hull timbers and keep water from entering vessels. Archaeological evidence shows some use of coatings on interior portions of ancient vessels as well, but coating the interior was not necessary simply to keep the surrounding water outside the hull.

That was Missler's question: If the purpose was simply waterproofing, why pitch the inside too?

His suggestion was preservation. Coating timber on both sides could do more than help keep water out. It could help isolate and protect the wood itself from moisture and deterioration. Missler wondered whether God had instructed Noah to construct the Ark in a way that would allow it to survive long after the Flood was over.

Perhaps the Ark wasn't designed only to survive the Flood. Perhaps it was designed to survive history.

Missler couldn't prove that, and he didn't present the idea as biblical doctrine. But he believed the possibility was worth considering, and it led him to an even more intriguing question.

What If God Intended It to Be Found?

The Bible never tells us that Noah's Ark will be discovered in the end times. There is no verse saying that the Ark will reappear shortly before Daniel's 70th Week, and we shouldn't manufacture one.

But Missler speculated that the Ark might someday emerge in God's timing as a testimony to another unbelieving world approaching judgment. His reasoning was simple. Before the Flood, the Ark itself was a physical witness to Noah's warning. People could see this enormous vessel being built. They could dismiss Noah, laugh at him, or simply ignore him, but the Ark was sitting there in front of them.

Then the rain came.

That thought becomes particularly interesting when Jesus says in Matthew 24:37, “But as the days of Noe were, so shall also the coming of the Son of man be.” Jesus explicitly directs our attention back to the days of Noah when discussing His return. He doesn't say the Ark will be discovered, but Missler wondered whether the vessel itself might still have one final role as a physical witness.

It's important to separate two questions here. Missler's speculation was about whether God intended the Ark to be preserved. The researchers in Turkey are asking whether Durupınar could be that Ark. Those are not the same claim, and Missler was not specifically identifying today's Durupınar research as the fulfillment of his idea.

Still, put the two questions next to each other and they become difficult not to think about.

But Haven't Scientists Already Dismissed Durupınar?

There are serious geological arguments that Durupınar is a natural formation, and they deserve to be taken seriously. Geologists have proposed natural explanations for supposed walls, metallic material, petrified wood and other features that proponents have identified at the site.

That's not a problem for me. If Durupınar is geological, careful investigation should demonstrate that. But an explanation proposed decades ago also shouldn't prevent scientists from examining the formation again with technology that didn't exist when many of those conclusions were reached.

Turkey itself gives us a useful reminder of why that matters. Göbekli Tepe was surveyed in 1963, but researchers didn't recognize the extraordinary significance of what was beneath the hill. When German archaeologist Klaus Schmidt revisited the site in 1994, he recognized something very different. Excavations eventually revealed monumental structures dating back roughly 11,000 years and helped reshape our understanding of early human societies.

Göbekli Tepe didn't change during those three decades. Our understanding of it did.

That doesn't mean Durupınar is another Göbekli Tepe. It means that science works best when conclusions remain open to better evidence. Christians should operate by the same standard. We shouldn't turn every radar anomaly into a wall or every unusual chemical reading into Noah's floorboards simply because we want the discovery to be true.

If the Bible is true, it doesn't need us to massage the evidence.

So, Is It Noah's Ark?

We don't know. And right now, I think that's the only responsible answer.

We have a roughly 515-foot-long, boat-shaped formation in the broader Ararat region. Genesis describes an Ark 300 cubits long, and one documented ancient cubit measurement produces a remarkably similar length. Genesis places the Ark in the mountains of Ararat, rather than specifically on the summit of the modern mountain. Modern geophysical research has identified subsurface features researchers believe deserve additional investigation, and physical sampling could eventually tell us much more about what's actually beneath the surface.

Then there is that curious instruction in Genesis. God told Noah to coat the Ark with pitch inside and outside. Chuck Missler, a U.S. Naval Academy graduate who knew something about ships, wondered whether the interior coating might have served another purpose: preservation. And he speculated that perhaps God intended the Ark to survive long enough to become a witness to another generation.

Maybe Durupınar is an extraordinary geological coincidence. Maybe there is something constructed beneath that formation. Maybe the next round of research will answer questions that people have been arguing about for decades.

Or maybe something has been sitting there all along, waiting for us to recognize what we're looking at.

I don't know.

But I'm certainly watching.
